pku 寫:That's what I was taught in my level 1 training. pivot is the turning of the foot and edging is use the knee to may the ski on edge. Since for more performance skiing, we combine the 2 thinks to make the turn rounder and they call it steering.
This years PDP, what the 3 focus are: mobile althetic stance, steering by lower body and bouncing on edges. What I see what they trying to do is not much difference for all high end skier.
pivot is twisting/redirection of skis when they are not engaged (edging neutral).
steering is (same as your sentence but replace pivot with twisting)
I am not saying I am right. Again, just information sharing

I think you mean Powder.
Most strong skier can ski powder with a 68th waist skis ( 15 years ago, most people use skinny skis to ski powder ) and also depends on what type of powder, If you can ski powder on North Shore mountain, you can ski powder every where. ( I can't)
I think the following is more aggressive, efficiency and strong

They now saying turning thigh bone against hip socket is also a pivot movement. ( even the skis are on edge ) That's what I was told

I think that you might want to go back to check again. Our PSIA has a different definition than this one.

I think pku is correct. Here is the definition that is extracted from CSIA manual.
Steering: The blend of edging and pivoting with the control of the resulting pressure.

That's what the manual said, but given that pivoting causes sliding, and sliding causes edge losing pressure, how do you do it/steering?
:)

You are right, more edge with bother pivoting ( turning the skis ) but ot use pivot and edge together ( which one use more depends on situation )
To control speed, we need to use more pivoting , on the other hand if ski fast, we need less pivoting and to the extreme; almost no pivoting ( carving - 2 pensil line on snow ) That's why the CSCF doesn't talk about pivoting at all.

The first guy of the video is a demonstrator of Japan and got 2 years champion in the tecnical skiing, you can see how well his skis got constant contact with the snow, the 2nd and 3 rd guys are top CSIA level 4 in Whistler ( I was told by another level 4 who did the video )
I was a full and part time instructor ( as carver said, " low level instructor) on Whistler for 5 years starting 2001.
Quit the ski school and enjoy skiing with friends, ski Whistler every sunday and form the Vancouver ski gang and invite all Chinese skier visiting whistler to work as mountain Guide.

That's interesting! I would like to visit Whistler again sometimes next year. Can you check to see if my PSIA card can get me any discount there?

the term use and defination is always different by different system. Just see how they actually do it on slope.
Just like Harald, his legs extend ( from short to longer ) to the side and he said he still keep his legs flexd. As his student do the same thing, then it ok.

Yes, I agree. BTW, Harald used to be a member of PSIA demo team.

Thanks for the information.
I would like to, but the schedule is tight. If I can find a time to go, I will definitely let you know. Me and my friends are discussing our next ski trip to either Steamboat or North Tahoe.
BTW, since you are Whistler's local, I cannot wait to tell you how much we love the Sushi Village and Bear Foot.

How do you pivot in powder, especially wet powder? How do you control speed without pivot in powder. One ought to think about use turn shape and terrain for speed control.
