#1 Direct to parallel
The one of most common ways of the old schools to teach skiing progression is to start out a beginner with a wedge stance, which brakes the skier's speed naturally, so the beginner can learn to do Wedge Turns/snowplows, then it progresses to do Christie Turns, then onto the Parallel Turns.
The slow speed of the wedge stance, easy to control and easy to learn, is good for the beginners to learn and to begin their skiing journey, however, when the habit is formed, the habit is hard to break, even some well verse in parallel turns advanced skiers stumble into wedge turns where the going gets tough, such as on steep terrain.
In functionality, there's nothing wrong with Christie Turns, only they break the grace and beauty of the Parallel Turns. So, what's the remedy? To kill the culprit at its roots, don't teach "wedge turns," teach "Direct to Parallel" instead.
Interesting subject, anyone?

Wedge turn and christie turn are not the way we want to ski. It's just a learning process and CSIA call it fast track to parallel. Wedge turn is never easy to control because it require a strong pivoting movement from hip joint. it's quite difficult for senior including me because their joint are stiff. People think it's easy just because they form a wedge shape and cheating to turn with side cut not with the feet. One have good control wedge turn on steep that means he has very strong upper and lower body seperation and always turn with lower body and well balance. in our CSIA training sometimes we review this drills and not many skiers do it well.If advanced skiers stumble into wedge turns where the going gets tough that just means he is off balance and not able to turn with both feet.taichiskiing 寫:The one of most common ways of the old schools to teach skiing progression is to start out a beginner with a wedge stance, which brakes the skier's speed naturally, so the beginner can learn to do Wedge Turns/snowplows, then it progresses to do Christie Turns, then onto the Parallel Turns.

Fast track to skiing, maybe, but to "parallel"? No, that's why "Direct To Parallel"/DTP comes into the picture. Wedge turn and christie turn are bad news/side-effect for "parallel skiing," once the bad habit is formed, it is really hard to get rid of.beg 寫:Wedge turn and christie turn are not the way we want to ski. Maybe you didn't teach them right? The wedge is formed by two skis' inside edges pointing together, so a wedge turn is to drive the "whole" wedge, not the individual skis, to turn so to maintain the integrity of the wedge. Once the "wedge" is maintained, both legs equally weighed, the wedge goes straight; right foot heavy, the wedge turns left, and vise versa. It is easier to turn the wedge with hips/pelvis. Once the outside/downhill ski has gained the control of the turn, match the inside/uphill ski to the outside ski to become parallel, and that is the essence of "christie turn." "Christie turn," due to the wedge turn, is slow but stable, is an effective technique for the beginners, the problem arises when some intermediate skiers hold on them too long, and prevent them from progressing into "true" parallel skiing. Due to my arthritis, I can no longer do effective wedge skiing anymore.Wedge turn is never easy to control because it require a strong pivoting movement from hip joint. it's quite difficult for senior including me because their joint are stiff. Not necessarily "off balance," "Christie turn" is still an effective and less tiring way to get down a mogul hill.If advanced skiers stumble into wedge turns where the going gets tough that just means he is off balance and not able to turn with both feet.

One foot heavy to make it turn is what I mean cheating to use side cut to turn. The idea of wedge turn for beginner is turn with the feet but I do cheating when demo because it's easier to turn with edge. Of course you turn with both feet to mantain the wedge. A skier not doing true parallel turn because lack of understanding angulation and inclination. Two feet stick together without daylight like you could be a barrier to true parrell turn too.taichiskiing 寫: Maybe you didn't teach them right? Looks like you do christie turn to control the turn radidus on a challenge run. You can't control the turn shape because you have too much upper body movement to put you off balance so you do christie turn to slow you down. Watch this real instructor perform a good control and consistance christie turn. His upper body is calm and turn with the feet but you sometimes turn with your upper body.taichiskiing 寫: Not necessarily "off balance," "Christie turn" is still an effective and less tiring way to get down a mogul hill.

That is the intension.so the solution is push them to parallel before the bad habit formed.
No, in wedge, the whole sidecut is used to brake the speed of the ski, and the ski doesn't travel following the sidecut. The skier turns because the differential force that are exerted by the two skis, and the skis are turned by the "whole" trunk of the body, that is, "hips" or pelvis. You "cheat," so you don't understand the true meaning of the "wedge turn," extrapolating it out, it shows that you lack of understanding why a ski turns. Do you know the difference between "angulation" and "inclination," or you're just mouthing the terminologies like norman? And no, she doesn't ski every day.One foot heavy to make it turn is what I mean cheating to use side cut to turn.
